PART TIME JOBS FOR STUDENTS

Legal requirements for hiring students.

There are legal requirements and restrictions for hiring secondary school students to
work, even on a temporary basis.
According to human resources officer Mohd Fared A. Manaf of McDonald's local chain operator Golden Arches Restaurant Sdn Bhd, some of the minimum requirements under the Mlaysian
Employment Act on hiring young people are:
  • Females must be atleast 16 years old;
  • Males must be atleast 14 years old;
  • Employees cannot work more than seven hours day, six days a week;
  • Employees must have a minimum 12-hour rest between shifts.
"At McDonald's Malaysia, our part-time crew (comprising 50% students) work for a minimum of four hours to a maximum of seven hours a day. We determine their working hours based on the restaurant's shift," Fared said.
"A part-time crew member is paid between RM3 to RM4.50 per hour, depending on their experience. Crew members at certain outlets are also given transport allowance," he said.
"They get to enjoy benefits like one free meal for each day that they work, insurance coverage and clinical care," he said.
According to Fared, the company also offers the young crew members career opportunities to go beyond working part-time. ~ the star ~
